TLG – Back in the Groove

Tea Leaf Green visits Atlanta for the first time without original bassist, Ben Chambers. A few months back TLG announced that Ben Chambers would be leaving the band to pursue other opportunities. Since this time, I have had the pleasure of seeing the band twice, once in Athens nearly one month ago and last night at the Variety Plahouse in Atlanta. TLG has been playing with ALO’s bassist, Steve Adams who is temporarily filling in until Reed Mathis can rejoin the band.

The show in Athens was in a venue that I had not yet visited, the infamous 40 watt. A location where many famous bands have played as they work their way to playing larger venues, like the Georgia Theater. I had a great time at this show but it did not seem to have the energy and soul of the typical TLG experience.

The Variety Playhouse was a completely different story. The band seemed comfortable in their new skin and was clearly happy to be in Atlanta, where they always receive a warm welcome. This night, the band played everything from their heavier rock songs to their funky, spacey jams and made several smooth transitions from song to song. All of the band members were lighthearted and their playing certainly reflected that. I will have fond memories of Trevor, Josh, and Steve casting smiles on each other from across the stage, following a massive 3 song encore.
